A practical buyer’s guide
Lucerne seed is for establishing a forage crop. Choose verified seed suited to your location, and confirm the actual variety and lot before ordering.
Verify the seed lot
Ask for the variety, supplier, lot number, net seed weight and the relevant seed label. For seed sold as certified in Kenya, verify the KEPHIS certification label and seal rather than relying on an unlabelled bag.
Request the dated germination and purity information for the actual lot, plus storage instructions. No germination result, brand, pack size or present availability is assumed here.
Check suitability before planting
Discuss your rainfall or irrigation, soil drainage and soil-test results with a local agronomist. A variety used successfully elsewhere should still be assessed for your site.
Ask whether the seed is coated or inoculated, what the coating contains and how that affects the amount of actual seed in a pack. Follow the supplier’s handling instructions and obtain locally appropriate establishment advice.
Plan the enquiry
Share the proposed planting area, location and intended forage use. Request a written quotation identifying the variety, lot, pack contents and collection or delivery arrangements.
Keep the original label, invoice and a record of the sowing date. Agree a local establishment plan before buying; avoid choosing solely on the price per bag.
