Simmental: choosing for your farm
Origins and purpose
Simmental is a long-established European cattle breed with a broad international presence. This section concerns bulls for cattle breeding: a bull’s breed, sex and intended job should all be clear in the listing.
Simmental and Simbrah are different descriptions. Simbrah includes Brahman ancestry; if that is what is offered, the catalogue and enquiry should identify it accurately rather than shorten the name to Simmental.
Selection and records
Match a prospective sire to your cows, especially their size and maturity. Ask for available calving-ease, birth-weight and growth records, with an explanation of the recording system used.
Ask for the recording date, animal age and management group behind any performance figure. Compare like with like; a heavier animal fed differently is not automatically a better sire.
Husbandry and farm fit
Large appearance is not the same as the right breeding choice. Discuss year-round forage, water, handling facilities and the mature size you want in replacement females before committing to a sire.
Inspect your fencing, races and loading area before a bull arrives. Provide room for safe handling and arrange experienced help; a breeding plan is only useful when the animal can be managed reliably.
Questions before you buy
Before reserving a bull, ask his age, recent measured weight, identification, breeding history and whether he has worked with females. Confirm the scope and date of any fertility or health assessment with the attending professional.
Agree transport, safe loading and the receiving pen before collection. Discuss an arrival and separation plan with your local veterinarian, particularly when bringing a new sire into a breeding herd.
